THE ARTEMIS NORTH ATLANTIC CHALLENGE 2010

The Team

The four team members for this challenging North Atlantic Row are very experienced rowers who  possess great qualities, namely courage, commitment,  motivation, tenacity, strength, respect for the ocean and a sense of humour.

LEVEN BROWN - skipper

LEVEN holds four world records and a number of firsts in Ocean Rowing in unsupported solo and team expeditions. He has over 10,000 sea miles of rowing experience and has spent over 400 days at sea in rowing boats in various expeditions and sea trials. This new expedition sees three former team members joining him in this latest quest.

RAY CARROLL

RAY  has rowed since age 11 and competed for Ireland in a Junior World Championship, a European Championship and a World Student Games.  He trained as a Marine Engineer and sailed in the Merchant Navy for 12 years all over the World before becoming a Ship Manager with Irish Ferries in Dublin.  In his spare time he enjoys nothing more than hiking and rowing on the hills & lakes of Western Ireland.  Ray was an extremely positive team member of the 2007/08 World Record breaking crew, along with Leven and Don who smashed the Mid Atlantic crossing time in 33 days. As part of his fund raising efforts, Ray managed to raise over 90,000 Euros for depression charity Aware in memory of his brother, Aiden.  He has a Mother, father, 2 sisters and dog Elvis waiting for him back home.

DON LENNOX

DON  holds three world records and has rowed over 3000 sea miles. He is the onboard ‘physio’ and medic. Don rowed with ‘La Mondiale’ on both of her recent expeditions and is a great, keen and reliable team member.

LIVAR NYSTED

LIVAR won the Faroe Island championship in rowing, in 2001, 2004 and 2007.In 2005.  Livar is a strong rower and rowed with La Mondiale on the Trade Winds expedition and was certainly a key member of that team. Livar's sentiments are the same as and quotes Winston Churchill  - 'A man does what he must - in spite of personal consequences, in spite of obstacles and dangers and pressures - and that is the basis of all human morality'.
